This week’s eclectic playlist is dedicated to Apple Music, because, well, we love it. Any album, any song, any time. And to that end, this week we bring you our list – streamed from Apple Music.
We start by admitting that Taylor Swift is indeed dominating our inter web airwaves. In part, because she single handedly changed Apple’s payment distribution policy to artists by simply writing an open letter. We still don’t know exactly what the policy change entails, but regardless, she received a response the same day from the mighty Apple. You go Tay-Tay.
But really, the reason she makes our list is because her latest album 1989, is damn good. Start with the songs – you cannot deny the melodic and lyrical hooks. And don’t get us started on Max Martin’s production – just how does he get these tracks to be so ginormous???!!! At times it seems so simple: a big ass beat, a couple keyboard pads, and stacks of vocals. But, the end result is just so good.
Check out Taylor’s ‘1989’ here.
But this leads me to the second artist we’re listening to – one of our faves, Ryan Adams just announced this week through Instagram that he is covering Taylor’s 1989 in his own sweet vein. And Taylor is understandably freaking out (in a good way – not in an “I’m gonna sue your ass sorta way”). And we think this proves that Ryan Adams is a genius. G E N I U S.
As we wait for this magic to happen, lets listen to Ryan’s Ashes and Fire – because it is awesome.
Lastly, this week, for three reasons, we bring you Wilco’s new album – ‘Star Wars’.
- Because its called Star Wars. And the cover has a picture of a white cat.
- Because their live show is undeniable. We happened to see them this week, for the zillionth time, at The Greek Theatre in LA. And they did not disappoint. They just kill it every time. I read an article this week, compelling young new artists to work their craft, rehearse and refine their live show. One point made – and we fully agree:
Iggy Azalea can barely sell a ticket and Wilco hasn’t ever had a hit but performs to thousands a night. Who do you want to be? Of course you want to be Wilco, believe me.
- The third reason you want to listen to this album is because – guitars guitars and guitars. Jeff Tweedy, Pat Sansone, Nels Cline. Star Wars opens with angular and atonal bursts of guitar mayhem which demands the listener’s attention, brings on a rush of adrenaline and made us laugh. I can picture these guys in the studio having way too much fun recording this. From there on the record is both a fantastic offering of great songs and sonic experimentation that we expect from this band.
Check out Wilco’s latest here.
Have a great week!
